ok, trying to get caught up. my new CD finally came back from the printer, and i got my first copies just before my 6/26 show with the Moools in Tokyo. That was a great one, with a packed house and so many old friends showed up as well. After my solo set, i sat in with the band, reprising the string arrangements i did for their new record Weather Sketch Modfied (as best i could without the help of 15 violins).
Then to Kyoto for a lovely intimate show with members of Soft, and then back out to the countryside to prepare for the Water & Light Project show. our days were spent rehearsing with all the various musicians, tweaking music to match video and vice-versa, and lots of bathing in hot springs in the shadow of Mt. Daisen. also killing bugs. avoid these:

むかで!
there was an attempt to stream the event here… didn’t seem to work too well but there are a few clips. i’ll put up my own soon.
tomorrow it’s off to Seattle for a friend’s wedding, and a show with the amazing John Atkins (764-HERO, Magic Magicians) on 7/13.

Brent Arnold is a cellist and composer with a wildly unorthodox approach, using amplification, guitar-like fingerpicking, electronics, and techniques from Arabic, Eastern, and African music.
He has worked with DJ/Rupture, Modest Mouse, Wayne Horvitz, Eyvind Kang, Sleater-Kinney, Death in Vegas, and Filastine.
He composed the cello music for Louis C.K.'s show Louie and numerous films and shorts.
Hello , Mr.Brent.
My name is Mayumi Okawa.
I had listened to your music in KYOTO(VIVA LA MUSICA) and YONAGO(SHOJI UEDA MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHY).
That time , I felt a lot…!! but I couldon’t speak English. So , I report a letter to you.
The sound of your cello was … emotional , deep , bautiful …and too sad.
[Apples, blood]melody is conceived me such as the desert , gost town , HIROSHIMA , 9.11N.Y …like the loneliness stand alone in ther lost place.
I feel sympathy this emotion.
I was shaken from the depth of hert.
In YONAGO , on July 4.
I felt the bigger emotion exceeding the loneliness, when you and junior high school students orchestra’s play [Apples, blood].
Cello’s melody overlapped flute, oboe, trumpet, high drum, and pretty’s drum…soon vibration became like a flow of river,
it was already hadn’t sad music ,but called [hope ] like a bird which flutters to where , was echoed highly and expaned to the air in YONAGO night.
It was a thing, happened.
When the image of one bird flies a sand hill top to the wall of a building is projected (Daniel’s picture),
a girl (prett’s daughter=MAO) a word sad “…It is sad”.
And after that she hold in her mother.
It might , when the person feels solitude , and feels own powerlessness , they learns sadness.
It might , when the person meets the person , get to know tenderness , and stand up from sadness.
…I conceived of such a thing from your music.
Thank you at wonderful time ,Brent , Daniel , Soft , and more people and beautiful place , YONAGO.
I’m glad to meet you and your music.
thank you for reading.
from Mayumi Okawa(大河真弓)
